Interior Limestone and Venetian Plaster
The majestic Pine Creek residence in Colorado Springs, CO was our first large scale interior plaster and limestone project. We covered close to 14,000 square feet with an array of styles and colors of Venetian plaster, all custom mixed to suit the clients wishes: The great room ceiling features custom stenciling in a pale terracotta matte plaster; the dining area features gold leaf wax overlaid on a high polish cerulean blue; and the guest bath features deep red plaster, also with high polish. A total of six full limestone columns and six half columns stand at attention along the main entryway. The house also features a number of limestone window and other framing trims. Over the course of this three month project, we are proud to have developed a close friendship and level of trust with our clients.
Exterior Venetian Plaster
Lime plaster has been used in Europe for centuries and we enjoyed working very specifically in this beautiful material to satisfy our builder's wishes to achieve an aged romantic look on the exterior of the Ravenna Golf Club, courting an old hacienda style. In order to achieve this effect, we blended two different colors of plaster and applied them in a layered fresco technique that we developed. Certain archway walls were covered in a complementary high polish custom application that results in an exquisite marble-like feel (see second row, far left photo). Additionally, we hand sculpted certain portions of the wall where they meet the edge of the roof tiles to provide a traditional "scalloped" effect and elegant visual transition (top row, center photo). This was our first, and very successful, large scale exterior plaster application in the Denver area.
This home received extensive exterior limestone treatments including balustrades on the front courtyard and front balcony, rear patio columns grouped in triplicates, custom designed entry, window sills and surrounds, three arched recessed windows at the front and archway trims at rear and side patios. The Broadmoor Resort Community was developed on the site of the former Broadmoor Hotel Ski Area. One of the main slopes is still prominent as an undeveloped parcel in the community.
Hand Sculpted Limestone Details
This limestone mantelpiece was inspired by the English Gothic style of architecture, and was one of six that was installed in this home in Flying Horse, CO. The edge work, and particularly the hand sculpted rosettes, required precision and patience resulting in a mantelpiece that showcases the versatility of this timeless material.
The Denver Pallet House renovation project, which won the AIA Denver 2017 Award of Excellence, is a single-family residence in Denver, Colorado. Wood shipping pallets on the home’s exterior create a unique design that filters light and screens the interior spaces, effectively melding form and function and lending the house its name. We are proud to have our Venetian plaster also featured prominently on this home. The modern high gloss finish plays with the filtered light from the pallets and reflects and absorbs the natural surroundings.
Scalloped Hearth and Limestone Columns
The Athens mantelpiece, a fun and challenging design, was placed directly center of the peak ceiling in this room. This allowed us to design a triangular pediment and entablature structure above our columns in classic Greek style. We presented a modification to our typical straight line hearth profile by adding scallops which give the design a whole new dimension. The triple scalloped hearth design was a first for us and mirrors the triple scallop of the mantel shelf (click on photos to view full image). Adding only two days to the manufacturing process, the Athens mantelpiece is indicative of Aria’s ability to quickly respond to a client’s request to customize an existing design.
The Jason Street Townhomes project is a 4-unit residential development in the historic Lower Highlands district of Denver completed in 2017. Our white Venetian plaster features prominently on the exterior. A mix of textured finish at the base and smooth finish on the higher levels creates a subtle floor distinction and complements the contrasting wood and steel architectural elements of the building.
Adam Tihany and his team at Tihany Design, N.Y. designed the renovation of portions of the Broadmoor West Hotel which included the new restaurant. The Ristorante Del Lago, which replaced the aging Charles Court, was styled after a popular resort location in the Lake Como region of Italy. For the Venetian plaster treatment we used a two plaster, three color, five coat technique that was specifically developed to exude "a rustic elegance; not too rustic, not too elegant” as directed by the design team. We developed several small samples using a "fresh on fresh" technique and translated the process onto larger walls and required strict attention to timing, the thickness of each coat, and just the right amount of polishing with the trowel. Adam Tihany and his team were thrilled with the results.
